ACCA’s Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Program is Excited to Announce A Summer Meal Program

Through a partnership with the Northeast Georgia Food Bank, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG) will provide much needed assistance with meals during the summer months when the grandchildren are not receiving free/reduced lunches and breakfasts through their local schools.  Our program will provide a bag of food, which includes six meals and two snacks, once weekly during the months of May, June, and July, to approximately 70 school-aged children.  With a food insecurity rate of 21%, Clarke County ranks among the highest numbers of food insecure individuals in the state.  Grandparents raising their grandchildren are at 50% higher risk of being food insecure.  Recent data collected by University of Georgia Food and Nutrition students found that 78% of the grandparent headed families we serve did not always have enough food to eat.  In recent months, our program has seen an increase in the number of requests for emergency food boxes, indicating that there is an urgent need for food assistance. The Summer Food Program will fill the gap left behind when schools close for the summer and breakfast and lunch are not provided.  By filling this gap, we decrease the risk of the grandchildren within our programs going without nutritious meals during the summer months.

We will collect the following items for our Summer Food Program:
– Peanut butter
– Individual mac-n-cheese packs (Easy Mac)
– Fruit cups
– Granola bars
– Apple sauce cups
– Pop-top/easy open items- individual beef stews, ravioli, soups, beef lasagna, macaroni o’s, spaghetti, etc.
– Individual cereal boxes (the small ones)
– Fruit juice packs
– Vienna sausages
– Individual cracker packs

If you are interested in participating, please bring your donation to the front lobby of ACCA.  We will have a red barrel in place for the items.
