The award is named in honor of Fred Birchmore, an Athenian who gained world renown when he bicycled around the earth in the 1930s. Fred passed away early in 2012 at the age of 100. During his long life, he inspired thousands of people with his energy, enthusiasm and positive outlook. He gave of himself to promote wellness and physical activity, including the donation of land to Athens-Clarke County for the expansion of Memorial Park. We are honored that Fred gave us permission to name this award in his honor, and hope it will inspire others to follow his example for many years to come.
