UGA Vet Home Visits for Meals on Wheels Clients

Pets are such a beloved part of anyone’s family and that is certainly true for our Meals on Wheels clients. With obstacles that our clients face in their lives – access to transportation, limited mobility, financial resources – many find it hard to access veterinary care for their pets.

Thanks to a new partnership with the University of Georgia Vet Med, Drs. Mary Hondalus, Sara Gonzalez and Ira Roth and their students will be providing home visits as part of the vet student’s Community Care rotation. The visits will include a wellness exam, basic vaccines and blood work and the delivery of preventative medications for the pets, all of which will be a great assistance to our clients. Providing excellent veterinary care directly in the homes of these older adults at no cost allows our Meals on Wheels program to continue to grow and provides more than a meal.

This partnership will enable ACCA to provide more holistic care for the program participants and the animals they love. It also offers the Vet Med students the opportunity to learn more about this underserved community, to see the circumstances that can impact pet ownership, to practice basic care in a non-clinical setting and to influence thoughts about their own future practice. We can’t wait to see this partnership flourish! Check out a few photos from our very first visits.
