Foster Grandparent Program

The Foster Grandparent Program matches older adults with children that may benefit from extra support. Foster Grandparent volunteers serve 5 to 40 hours each week in schools, Head Start programs, and day care centers where they mentor, tutor, and provide one-on-one support.

This program provides a unique opportunity for older adults with lower incomes, as volunteers are able to earn a small hourly stipend, and are reimbursed some meal and mileage costs.

Foster Grandparent Volunteer“I can see that I make a difference in students’ lives. I am able to see the children’s’ progress over the year, and the teacher acknowledges and appreciates what I am doing.” – Juanita, Foster Grandparent Volunteer

Volunteers are at least 55 years old, and live in Barrow, Clarke, Elbert, Greene, Jackson, Madison, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Oglethorpe, or Walton County. Prior to enrollment, volunteers will clear a physical and background checks. Income verification is required to receive the stipend and cost reimbursements.

Benefits of the Program include a tax-free stipend of $4.00/hour, orientation and on-going training, volunteer recognition events, paid leave time, and more.

“[The volunteer] has helped [the student] with her reading confidence, and the student reads to her on a daily basis. This extra practice and confidence building has helped the student move up 4 reading levels… In addition to helping the student grow academically the friendship bond created between [the volunteer] and [the student] has helped the child grow tremendously.” – Lindy, Teacher
