2018 March for Meals 5K
The Athens Community Council on Aging along with Meals on Wheels America is excited to announce the 16th annual March for Meals campaign. This campaign gives businesses, organizations, governments, and volunteers who contribute so generously in their communities an opportunity to join the fight against senior hunger by participating in a variety of events being held over the course of the month. For the 8th consecutive year, the Athens Community Council on Aging will be holding the March for Meals 5K to benefit our local Meals on Wheels program.
This year’s 5K will begin and end at Creature Comforts Brewing Company on March 24, 2018 at 8:00 am.
In Athens, 1 in 5 seniors struggles with food insecurity and many of these individuals are socially isolated. The Athens Community Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program works diligently to combat these statistics by striving to continuously expand our program which serves Clarke and Barrow counties. Seniors served through Meals on Wheels receive daily meal deliveries Monday through Friday as well as supplementary frozen and shelf stable meals for evenings and weekends. These daily meal deliveries by a trained volunteer meet much needed nutritional needs, but also serve as a friendly visit and safety check for these frail, older adults. Last year alone, Athens Community Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program served 62,465 meals with the help of over 200 volunteers and staff. However, in our community, more than 60 seniors are waiting to receive meals due to lack of funding.
Through this year’s 5K, we hope to raise enough money to fund over 1,700 meals for seniors in need in our Meals on Wheels service area. Register below to help us reach that goal!
