What the Center for Active Living Means to Me
Since 2017, the Center for Active Living has given participant Marcy Tanner the opportunity to build connections and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Learn what CAL means to her below!
Why did you choose to get involved with CAL and why have you stayed?
CAL’s local and distance travel opportunities are exceptional. As a single individual, I’ve enjoyed excursions I would never have attempted on my own. Unlike some travel services, I am always welcome as a single traveler and am never charged an additional amount as a single traveler.
CAL has a wide range of guest speakers and presenters with current pertinent information. The size of the audience is such that attendees can feel comfortable and confident commenting/questioning during the presentation. Many of these interactions lead to further involvement with community agencies and activities.
CAL has a commitment to physical activities for members. The activity leaders are skilled and the exercise setting is friendly and comfortable.
The Annual Membership Dues are incredibly reasonable at $40. Costs for other activities are easy on the budget.
What parts of CAL have you participated in (classes, seminars, arts and crafts, etc.)?
I traveled with CAL on an Alaska Cruise in 2019 as well as to Savannah and Charleston by chartered bus, and enjoyed numerous outings around Athens and throughout the state. Also, each month CAL offers guest speakers on age pertinent topics to inform about nutrition, dementia, technology, crime that preys on seniors, talent from UGA’s Music School, distance learning via Zoom, and much more.
What do you value most about CAL?
CAL feels like my community with its friendly, welcoming atmosphere. It clearly is a nonjudgmental environment where I can be myself. CAL offers various opportunities to support the community via contributions to Meals on Wheels, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, and Be A Santa To A Senior.
Why should others support CAL?
CAL is a cost-effective way to engage with and support the community. It is an outstanding avenue for socializing that is recommended for a healthy life.
